Sono-Dyne, and Utopia Hemp in Ontario Canada with University of Western Ontario, UWO / ICFAR London are working on technology to de-fluorinate and destroy waterborne PFAS / PFOS Fluoro-Carbon species found in our drinking water and other aqueous media such as AFFF’s (Aqueous Fire Fighting Foams) and banned Fluoro-Carbon refrigerants such as Freon. Our technology can be adapted and applied to the remediation of landfill leachate from where significant amounts of PFAS / PFOS leaches into our ground water over time. Existing civil and domestic water filtration technology does not destroy PFAS / PFOS in our drinking water.

Our Fluoro-Kinetic technology at first passively captures aqueous PFAS / PFOS at the wetted carbon surfaces with turbulent water flow past the disc graphite electrodes. Then, after a period of accretion time, sufficient surface energy is applied to the carbon surfaces instantly making Hydrogen Fluoride (HF) with the free hydrogen made available from water electrolysis to destroy PFAS / PFOS embedded and captured on the carbon electrode disc surfaces. The hydrogen fluoride HF is then reacted and mineralized by Calcium Hydroxide to make Calcium Fluoride (Fluorite) as a harmless by-product along with surplus H + OH hydroxyls which can be directed to a fuel cell to generate electrical power.

The initial validation used Teflon PTFE tape as the sample source of PFAS wrapped around the graphite cathodic electrodes having an electro-kinetic surface energy of 130 kcal / mol which is the Carbon-Fluorine binding energy in PFAS / PFOS species.

Lead, Barium and other rare earth constituents in PZT’s are toxic and will contaminate the drinking water as they leach out of the PZT morphology over time, making the PZT approach not easily commercialized.

An electromagnetic method of generating the needed 130 kcal / mol of surface energy without PZT technology has been bench tested. This method provides a tunable bandwidth of up to 4 kHz with a much greater kinetic surface displacement than is possible with PZT’s and does not introduce rare earth toxic pollutants into the water.

A Hydrogen Fluoride detector with software has confirmed the presence of HF gas having it’s origin from the Teflon tape (PFAS). Levels up to 20 ppm Hydrogen Fluoride have been detected and recorded commensurate with applied energy to the graphite disc electrodes.
